Otherside Boardsports Demo Adventure

At 2pm on Friday afternoon we got word there was going to be some warm wind down in the Florida Keys and a big Demo day hosted by our friends at Otherside Boardsports. A few minutes later we had our plane tickets booked and were scrambling to pack our new Cabrinha gear and get ourselves to the airport for a 5pm flight. Winds were forecasted out of the NE building to high 20s, Liquid Force, Tona, and Best were all confirmed so the stage was set for an epic weekend.

Landing later that night in Miami we managed to reserve a rental car and a hotel and set out making our way South to Islamorada. Looking for a late dinner we hit up Hogs Heaven, still bumping at midnight we managed to get some grub before crashing for the night.

Saturday morning brought beautiful sunshine and a light breeze. We secured breakfast at Bayside Gourmet, this place is awesome, and then took a tour to check out the local launches.

Around 10am we dropped into Otherside Boardsports in Islamorada and spent some time catching up with Ryan and Chris. These guys have such a great thing going, huge selection, super knowledgeable, and stoked on WOO naturally!

With the wind building we jumped back in the car and headed down towards Marathon. Before hitting the beach we stopped in at Keys Cable Otherside Boardsport’s cable park, rental center, and sustainable farm located in Marathon Florida. Sexton and Nate took some time to show us the park the talk through all of the amazing things they are doing there. They have two 2 point cable systems, SUPs for rent, a volleyball court, and sustainable farm providing all sorts of fresh goodness. With plans to add a zip line system, expanded ecotourism, and a commercial kitchen you can tell these guys are thinking big and really trying to create something unique to the Florida Keys.

At this point the wind was blowing over 20 MPH and it was time to hit the beach. Showing up at Curry Hammock State Park we were greeted by Rich Sabo (Liquid Force), Ben Jopling (Best Kiteboarding) and a bunch of kiters excited to take advantage of the warm wind/water.

Throughout the day we talked with kiters from the Keys, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, and as far away as Texas and Pennsylvania. Everyone was trying out the new 2016 gear along with the WOO, comparing which kites jumped higher and had the most hangtime. Typical with these types of events a little friendly banter started up as to who could jump the highest. With the WOO there was no question on the day, and I know people were already discussing a rematch.

Packing up at the end of the day and heading back to Miami to catch a flight home it was all smiles. Everyone was so positive and stoked to share another great day together chasing the wind and sharing in our mutual passion. There is something special about Kiteboarding. People of all ages, backgrounds, and experience come together and the combined excitement grows exponentially. We can’t thank the Otherside crew and all the other kiters enough for their hospitality, we will 100% be back.
