If you have never been to California’s Central Coast or the Pismo area be sure to put it on your list. Endless coastline is just the start, this place is nestled into the mountains filled with national parks, wildlife, wineries/breweries, and unbelieveable eats just to name a few things. There is also some epic kiting! We traveled out from Boston to see what the Pismo Kite Expo was all about.
With over a dozen brands represented and hundreds of kiters descending on Pismo Beach the 14th Annual Kite Expo the stage was set for an amazing event. This year the event was not just an Expo but also a celebration of life, remembering Kinsley Wong. Kinsley was a kiteboarding pioneer in California whose energy and heart was bigger than life. Live Like Kinsley was the theme of the weekend and people came out from across the country to be apart of it.
WOO Sports was stoked to be a part of the event and run a 2 day Big Air contest. We had solid wind on Friday and Saturday with people riding everything from 8m to 17m kites over the two days. Friday saw the strongest winds with the top 3 riders logging 12.3m, 10.5m and 9.9m jumps.
Saturday the wind wasn’t as strong but a lot more people came out and got a chance to try the WOO and all the other gear available. Best jump of the day was Patrick Israel with a solid 10m, just barely squeezing him into 3rd place past local Jason Lee at 9.9m from the day before.
At the end of the Expo the results were settled, and the winner was crowned. Big shout out to the winner of our Big Air Contest DJ Guacamole who continues to dominate the leaderboards across California!
Saturday night there was a silent auction to benefit Kinsley’s family, BBQ courtesy of Maui Mike, and a beach bonfire to keep the celebration going after the sun went down. Sunday morning there was a paddle out to complete the celebration of Kinsley’s life before people began to head home.
We were stoked to meet so many new kiters and get them logging their first WOO Sessions! Everyone was surprised to see how much data the WOO gave you, how easy it was to use, and most importantly how fun the WOO Kite App and user experience was.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by the WOO Tent and got in on the fun! Congrats to all the first time WOOsters, look forward to seeing you on the leaderboards soon!
